let me take you out

I woke up one Saturday morning early this January to the sun shining and glaring at me, through the large attic window in my uncle’s house in London, and thought to myself, ‘it can’t get any better than this!’ Apart from hanging out with one of my best friends in one of the greatest cities in the world, the day didn't get any better.

The sun was out, skies were blue, birds were chirping, it was the perfect day for a date with my long time high school friend, Ka-Men. She decided to take me for a boat ride along Regent’s Canal. I was surprised by the idea because it sounded very romantic and touristy, and Ka-Men is neither. It was just unlike her. It turns out that it was a Wowcher deal she bought many moons ago for a day out with the other half, for reasons unknown, that didn’t work out, obviously. Ha, I knew it! Then it made sense. Either way, I was glad and so happy that she took me instead on this boat ride. And I learnt that, amongst other things, she can be quite the romantic. So unlike her…

Who would have thought, 9 years after leaving high school, the both of us in London, on a boat, arguing about whether or not it would be safe to sit on the roof of the boat. Some things never change; I always let her talk me into doing things. We ended up having the best view of East London. Yes, I like to follow the rules and not attract unnecessary attention. But it’s hard to stick by these simple principles in life when Ka-Men’s around. I still wonder to this day, how did we become friends. Anyway, that’s a story for another day.

She bold and brash; rebellious and fearless. She opened my eyes to a different world. The real world. What's most important is that she always kept it real. And I know I can trust her for an honest opinion. She was also the reason I made frequent trips to the principal's office. Despite all that she has gone through, she's grown to be strong and independent; now living a life that she has always wanted in a great city that may not tie her down for too long, watch out Barcelona. Whenever I am with her, I am a different person - less uptight. But what I truly enjoy being with her is the way she makes me laugh – no one makes me laugh like she does, oh the stomach cramps I get.

The boat ride brought us to Broadway Market where we ate locally-sourced, organic, specialty food, enjoyed coffee at one of the many upscale hipster cafés along Broadway Market and talked about Coachella, the city of Granada and the infrastructure in Malaysia. As part of the Wowcher deal, we ended the evening with wine and dim sum (the ang moh way) at the Drunken Monkey, a pretty funky place.

the most expensive marshmallow we ever bought. ever. also the most exquisitely soft, light and gooey marshmallow we ever tasted.

this is where I'd get furnitures for my home. now would be a good time to exercise apparition.

Best date of 2014 so far.
